Apply for the Student Union badges and scholarships

In the spirit of the holidays it’s time to think about all the good we have accomplished. Do this now in the form of Student Union badges and scholarships!

Every year the Student Union along with its fellow support associations hand out a variety of badges and stipends to honor members for their hard work and dedication to constantly improve SHS!

As a member of SHS you can apply for different badges and grants yourself or nominate a fellow student that you believe is worth the award!

These prestegious awards will be handed out at the Student Union’s Annual Ball, February 24th 2024.

Below you will find a descriptive list of all the badges and stipends that you can apply for yourself or nominate a fellow student to. 

The deadline for all applications and motivated letters for all badges and grants is January 7th 2024 at 23:59 and should be sent to the following email: ansokan@shs.fi. For the Solrosen and Nord grants the deadline is 11.1.2024.

Ceremonial Badges 

Stora kårnålen in silver

  • Awarded to a board member, Student Council member, committee chairperson, student union activist, union member, or any other person who, through their activities for SHS, has earned its recognition. 
  • Proposals for the awarding of the badge are submitted in writing by five (5) registered union members, board members, members of the senior council, delegates, or members of the badge and scholarship committee to the badge and scholarship committee.

Stora kårnålen in bronze

  • Awarded to a team leader or member of a committee, club, special association, council, committee, or any other person who, through their activities for SHS, has earned its recognition. 
  • Proposals for the awarding of the badge are submitted in writing by three (3) registered union members, board members, members of the senior council, delegates, elected representatives, or members of the badge and scholarship committee to the badge and scholarship committee.

Lilla förtjänstmärket 

  • Awarded to an individual who, through their activities for SHS, has particularly earned its recognition. 
  • Proposals for the awarding of the badge are submitted in writing by five (5) registered union members, board members, members of the senior council, delegates, or members of the badge and scholarship committee to the badge and scholarship committee.”

Kamratskapsmärket 

  • Is awarded to a regular Student Union member who specially deserves the recognition of being a ”good friend” and who has promoted a good Hanken-spirit. Kamratskapsmärket requires a nomination from one Student Union member.
  • Suggestions for recipients of the camaraderie badge are presented by a registered union member and submitted to the badge and scholarship committee.

Kåraktivitetsmärket

  • Awarded to a member of a committee, club, special association, council, committee, or any other person who, through their activities for SHS, has earned its recognition. 
  • Proposals for the awarding of the badge are submitted in writing by two (2) registered union members, board members, members of the senior council, delegates, elected representatives, or members of the badge and scholarship committee to the badge and scholarship committee.

Intressebevakningsmärket i guld

  • Intressebevakningsmärket in gold is awarded to a Student Union member who has through student advocacy and educational affairs represented SHS and its interests in the University Council, Hanken’s Executive Board, the Academic Council or similar organs. 
  • Suggestions for the awarding of the badge are always submitted in writing by the current educational policy representative in the student union’s board. Proposals for the awarding of the badge can also be made by three (3) registered union members, board members, members of the senior council, delegates, or members of the badge and scholarship committee, and submitted to the badge and scholarship committee.

Intressebevakningsmärket i silver

  • Intressebevakningsmärket in silver is awarded to a Student Union member who has through student advocacy and educational affairs represented SHS and its interests in Hanken’s institutional Councils or similar organs. 
  • Suggestions for the awarding of the badge are always submitted in writing by the current educational policy representative in the student union’s board. Proposals for the awarding of the badge can also be made by three (3) registered union members, board members, members of the senior council, delegates, or members of the badge and scholarship committee to the badge and scholarship committee.

Jalles Horn Memorial Badge

  • The Scholarship committee awards this memorial award, known as Jalles Horn, in honor of Jalle Storgård. The merits for a person from the Student Union to receive the bi-yearly award includes one or more of the following; progressed the academic and student like traditions of SHS, contributed and maintained the international contacts of the Student Union, assisted in the maintenance of Casa Academic and contributed to the arrangements of the Annual Ball. The memorial award cannot be applied for. The candidates can be proposed by the SHS Executive Board, the Scholarship Committee or by a member of the Student Union. The decision of the recipient made by the Scholarship Committee cannot be disputed or overturned.

Scholarships

The Student Union Grant (250 euro)

  • Can be applied for and awarded to a student who has greatly contributed to the Student Union or the Student Association in Vasa. The Student Union scholarship is awarded to a student who has performed at least 120 credits in his or her own study program. Only Student Union merits are considered in awarding the Student Union scholarship. The application should include a study transcript and a transcript of Student Union merits.

KårAmbassadörStipendiet (2000 euro)

  • Can be awarded to students who greatly have contributed to SHS. The grant can not be applied for and only Student Union merits are considered in the awarding.

Student Union Activity Scholarships

Are awarded by the Student Union’s support associations to students who have held a more demanding position of trust within the Student Union. Positions within the Student Union which qualify for the scholarship are the following: a member of the Executive Board, president of the Student Council, president of Casa Nostra, treasurer of Casa Nostra, president for the Annual Ball Committee, president of the Information Committee, president of the Exchange Committee, president of the Freshman Committee, president of the Masters’ Committee, president of IHD, president of the Program Committee, president of the Sports Committee, president of the Central Election Committee, or president of SSHV. 

The applications are ranked by Student Union activity and can be applied for by the people who have held and fulfilled one of the positions during the year 2023.

Apply for the Niord grant

NIORD is seeking applicants for a two 250 euro stipend for students at Hanken in Helsinki. 

If you are active in promoting and bettering student life through SHS, or other Hanken- related activities, you are eligible to apply. Even occasionally posed projects can be considered.

You can apply for the grant for yourself, or on behalf of someone else. Send your freely formed application to ansokan@shs.fi by January 11th, 2024. The applications will be forwarded to NIORDs Grant Commission who elect the recipients  of the grant.

The grant is presented at the Student Union Annual Ball that is set to take place February 24, 2024.

Apply for the Solrosen grant

Are you studying a foreign language? Are you interested in learning about new cultures and traditions?

The Solrosen grant is given to a student at Hanken who is interested in other languages and cultures, preferably predominantly Spanish-speaking cultures. The scholarship is awarded to a student who intends to make a trip abroad, a trip for language studies or an exchange study to a Spanish-speaking country. Send a motivated and freely formed application to ansokan@shs.fi by January 11th, 2024. The grant is presented at the Student Union Annual Ball that is set to take place February 24, 2024.

All applications and motivation letters for SHS badges and scholarships 2024 should be sent to ansokan@shs.fi by 7.1.2023 at the latest. For Solrosen and Niord grants the deadline is 11.1.2023.
