Application for SHS Badges ans Scholarships is open!
Each year, the Student Union and various supporting associations award a range of badges and scholarships to their members to recognize students’ merit for their contributions to promoting activities at SHS.
Recipients of scholarships and badges are traditionally announced at the SHS Annual Ball on 24 February 2026.
Below you will find a list of badges and scholarships, as well as descriptions of those for which you can nominate a fellow student at Hanken, and those that can be applied for personally.
All applications and letters of motivation for SHS badges and scholarships 2026 must be sent to ansokan@shs.fi no later than 11 January 2026 at 23:59.
Badges
The Grand Union Badge in Gold
– Awarded to a former Union Chairperson and Inspector, or a comparable person, who through their work for SHS has become especially deserving of its recognition.
– Proposals must be submitted in writing by five registered Union members, a board member, a member of the Council of Elders, a Student Council representative, or a member of the Badge and Scholarship Committee.
The Grand Union Badge in Silver
– Awarded to a board member, Student Councilrepresentative, committee chairperson, active member, Union member, or another person who through their work for SHS has become deserving of its recognition.
– Proposals must be submitted in writing by five registered Union members, a board member, a member of the Council of Elders, a Student Council representative, or a member of the Badge and Scholarship Committee.
The Grand Union Badge in Bronze
– Awarded to a team leader or member of a committee, club, special association,Student Council subcommittee, or another person who through their work for SHS has become deserving of its recognition.
– Proposals must be submitted in writing by three registered Union members, a board member, a member of the Council of Elders, a Student Council representative, a trustee, or a member of the Badge and Scholarship Committee.
The Grand Merit Badge
– Awarded to a person who through their work for SHS has become exceptionally deserving of its recognition.
– Proposals must be submitted in writing by five registered Union members, a board member, a member of the Council of Elders, a Student Councilrepresentative, or a member of the Badge and Scholarship Committee.
The Small Merit Badge
– Awarded to a person who through their work for SHS has become particularly deserving of its recognition.
– Proposals must be submitted in writing by five registered Union members, a board member, a member of the Council of Elders, a Student Council representative, or a member of the Badge and Scholarship Committee.
The Fellowship Badge
– Awarded to an ordinary Union member who has proven themselves especially deserving of the designation “good comrade” and who has promoted the good Hanken spirit.
– Proposals may be submitted by any registered Union member to the Badge and Scholarship Committee.
The Activity Badge
– Awarded to a member of a committee, club, special association, Student Council, subcommittee, or another person who through their work for SHS has become deserving of its recognition.
– Proposals must be submitted in writing by two registered Union members, a board member, a member of the Council of Elders, a Student Council representative, a trustee, or a member of the Badge and Scholarship Committee.
The Advocacy Badge in Gold
– Awarded to a Union member who through active advocacy and representation of the Student Union in the University Collegium, Hanken’s Board, Academic Council, or comparable bodies has become deserving of its recognition.
– Proposals must always be submitted in writing by the sitting Education Policy Officer of the Board. Proposals may also be made by three registered Union members, a board member, a member of the Council of Elders, a Student Council representative, or a member of the Badge and Scholarship Committee.
The Advocacy Badge in Silver
– Awarded to a Union member who through active advocacy and representation of the Student Union in Hanken’s department councils or comparable bodies has become deserving of its recognition.
– Proposals follow the same rules as for the Advocacy Badge in Gold.
Jalle’s Horn
Jalle Storgård’s memorial prize “Jalle’s Horn” is awarded to a person who fulfils one or more of the following criteria within Student Union activities: promoted academic and student traditions, contributed to international relations, assisted in maintaining Casa Academica, or contributed to arrangements for the Annual Ball.
Proposals may be made by the Student Union Board, the Scholarship Committee, or any Union member.
Scholarships
Student Union Ambassador Scholarship (€2000)
Awarded to a student completing their final degree at Hanken who has acted as an ambassador connecting SHS with other student unions, associations, organisations, or the business sector, creating new opportunities for Hanken students.
Proposals may be made by the Student Union Board, the Scholarship Committee, or any Union member.
The SHS Union Scholarship (€250)
Awarded to students who have meritoriously contributed to the Student Union or the Student Association in Vaasa. Applicants must have completed at least 120 credits. Only student union merits are considered. The application must include a transcript of records and a list of merits.
Support Association Activity Scholarships
Awarded to students who have held a demanding position within the Student Union.
Qualified positions include:
Chair of the Student Council, Chair of CN, CN Treasurer, Chair of the Annual Ball Committee, Chair of the Information Committee, Chair of the Exchange Committee, Chair of the Freshers’ Committee, Chair of IHD, Chair of the Sports Committee, Chair of the Programme Committee, Chair of SSHV, Chair of the Masters’ Committee, Chair of the Central Election Committee, and individual board members.
Applicants must have held such a position during 2025 and completed their term.
Niord rf Scholarship (€250)
Niord rf awards two scholarships to students at Hanken in Helsinki who have been visibly active in SHS or Hanken’s activities and contributed to maintaining a positive image. Unique projects may also be considered. The scholarship is awarded at the SHS Annual Ball on 24 February 2026.
All applications and letters of motivation for SHS badges and scholarships 2026 must be sent to ansokan@shs.fi. The deadline is 11 January 2026.
