SHS Through the Years
The Student Union of Hanken School of Economics (SHS) was founded in 1909, originally under the name Kamratföreningen Niord. Over the years, the union has had several different names and organizational forms. SHS acquired its current status as a student union in connection with the university reform of 1979.
Today, the Student Union of Hanken School of Economics is a service and interest organization for its approximately 2,800 members. The student union is an independent public-law entity whose operations are regulated by the Student Union Decree. All students at Hanken School of Economics are members of SHS.
Over its nearly 100-year history, the student union has seen countless people and events. Here is a brief summary of more or less significant happenings over the years. The information has been gathered from, among other sources, the 50th anniversary edition of Hankeiten and the 80th anniversary publication, and has been slightly modified where deemed necessary.
1909 The higher Swedish tradeschool opens its doors
1910 A common reading hour is organized every monday for all the members in the association
1911 A magazine called Niord is founded
1914 A association ribbon in the colours white-black-white is introduced
1924 A seniour club is founded within the association
1927 No more than 86 students join the association, of whom 21 are female
1929 A restructure is made, and the tradeschool become The Swedish School of Economics and the association becomes a Student Union (Registered Associaiton)
1932 The student opera “Mohrens sista suck” is a great artistic success, but not so much a economical success story
1934 As the same time as the Student Union 25th anniversary is celebrated the big and small merit badge is introduced
1937 The first songbook is printed
1939 The titel “diploma in Economics” and “diploma correspondent” is taken into us by the Student Union
1939 The Senior Club becomes NIORD
1943 The Annual ball is interrupted by a hostile bomb attack, and the rest of the evening is spent in Fazers basement.
1945 Internship partnerships between the Nordic Student Unions begin at Hanken
1949 The Student Unions Revenue is 324 000 old mark (old Finnish currency)
1953 The Student Union is given facilities within the Univercity building
1954 The first annual ball is celebrated in the Student Unions own facilities
1955 The Officers of Hanken is foundend
1960 The Student Union fee was 30mk/year
1960 A “Mammothcarnival” to the benefit of refugees is organized
1960 The Student Unions support assosiation (UF) is given the task to solve the “facility” problem”
1961 Hanken does a world record for Guiness (sparkbrädssparkarrekordet)
1962 Intressebyrån (IB) grundas och står till tjänst med renskrivning och duplicering av seminarieuppsatser och andra arbeten
1963 Tomtanhållan inlämnas till Helsingfors stad
1963 Ölkällaren ställs till studentkårens förfogande
1964 Kårafton ordnas två gånger i veckan och Ölcci har öppet
1965 Stadsstyrelsen erbjuder en tomt i högskolans omedelbara närhet
1965 Klubben ”Akademisk Debatt –63” avslutar sin verksamhet
1966 Kårmötet ersätts av kårfullmäktige som tillsätts genom allmänna val
1966 Syföreningen Hanknål inleder sin (kortvariga) verksamhet
1969 En officiell halvdagstjänst inrättas på kåren; posten kallas generalsekreterare
1970 De första studeranderepresentanterna deltar officiellt i högskolans verksamhet
1971 Kåren slutar kollektivprenumerera på Studentbladet
1971 Hela 47% av de inträdessökande har finska som modersmål
1972 Kårvalskandidaterna ställde för första gången upp under politiska paroller
1972 SOS-Fadderklubb grundas
1974 Kåren söker inträde i Svenska Studenters Intresseförening som utger Studentbladet
1974 En halvsekelgammal dröm förverkligas då kåren flyttar in i egna lokaliteter i Casa Academica
1974 Mammouthfesternas era är slut
1975 Hanken förstatligas & studentkåren tar slutgiltigt plats i högskolans beslutande organ
1976 Ekonomisekreterarposten inrättas på kåren
1976 Programutskottet PUTTE grundas
1977 Korrespondentlinjen avvecklas
1977 Hankeiterna spelar biljard och flipper för FIM 5000/månad
1977 Casa Nostra grundas av ”Guran” Kurtén
1980 Svenska handelshögskolan grundas i Vasa
1980 Hela 43.4% av de intagna hade allmänna vitsordet laudatur i studentbetyget
1983 Nästan 10 000 studerande har skrivits in vid Hanken sedan 1909
1987 International Helsinki Days ordnas för första gången
1988 Kari Kairamo talar på SHS årsfest
1990 Ben Schnitt utnämns till studentkårens hedersordförande
1996 Studierna inleds i den nyrenoverade högskolebyggnaden
1997 Rekryteramässan ordnas för första gången
1998 Årets föreläsare -stipendiet grundas av studentkåren
1999 Jarl Storgårds utnämns till studentkårens hedersordförande

2016 Studentkårens ’koppi’ öppnas på Hankens huvudbyggnad
2018 Studentkåren renoveras och flyttar in i sina nyrenoverade lokaler
2019 Casas femma renoveras
2021 The student union’s own song “Ta mig Casa” is released for Vappen
2022 The Annual Ball is held in May for the first time due to the COVID-19 pandemic
2024 Casa turns 50 and is celebrated with a big party throughout the entire building

Casa Academica
In addition to being a place for parties Casa Academica is also home to the student union. The offices at Casa serve as a base of operations for the union’s committees and the board. It might seem obvious that the student union has its own building but a lot of work went into building our beloved home that in 2004 turned 30 years. The house has been renovated in 2005.
After many setbacks Casa Academica was finally opened on the 5th of November 1974, 13 years after the SHS Understödsförening (SHS UF, the supporting entity behind the student union) was founded. During these 13 years the UF fought hard in order to come up with the required funds to be able to begin building our home. Without the work done by SHS UF during the 1960’s and -70’s Casa Academica would still only be a dream.
Svenska Ekonomie Studenters Stiftelse SESS
Svenska ekonomie studenters stiftelse (SESS) is a foundation that supports Hankeit’s social, intellectuel and study related ambitions. The foundation can fulfill its purpose by supporting the students during their studies or at the beginning of their careers, or when they start their own businesses. In addition, the foundation supports initiatives to organize events between students and alumni, initiatives linked to student health and well-being, as well as communities and actors that promote the foundation’s purpose. The foundation primarily supports initiatives that benefit several people over individuals.
The foundation also owns the so-called union companies: SveCasa and Casa Security (aka IB Bookstore). SveCasa arranges the entrance exam preparation course closest to Hanken and from IB bookstore you will find study-related materials and student union products for “the good life”! The foundation is also a co-owner of Academic Business Consulting, the so-called “ABC course” at Hanken.
SESS was founded in 2015 and there are both expert members and student members at the board. The application period for the foundation’s executive board and supervisory board is published on SHS.fi. The application period for the foundation’s support is also published on shs.fi.

Greetings from SveCasa
Since 1978, Svecasa has helped applicants to prepare for the entrance exam to Hanken. Our lecturers are ambitious students who want to help prep-course takers to reach their dreams of being accepted to Hanken.
Svecasa organize both a longer, more covering course and an intensive course, where the most central subjects are covered. Even if the application reform 2018 changed the entrance litterature, Svecasa continues to go on with their operation as normal – the only thing that has changed is the course material.

You can find the IB bookstore on the basement floor of Hanken. We offer a wide range of services for students, Hanken personnel as well as external customers.
At IB you can for instance charge your printing credits, activate a Hanken key, and buy study material and literature or Hanken merchandise. We also take care of the rental of lockers, so if you wish to have a locker you can rent one here. At the end of your studies you may wish to have a binded copy of your thesis, which we can also help you with.
We also offer printing services for all needs. So if you find yourself needing to print in a different
format than A4 or maybe on a different type of paper, we can help you with that as well.
