SPONDA – Reaching and exceeding our energy efficiency and climate goals
Sustainability is an increasingly important value for our clients, supply chain and other
stakeholders. We want to create sustainable and vibrant urban spaces and feel very proud
of our sustainability achievements and the work that we do every day. Last year, we again
reached and exceeded our energy efficiency and climate goals. Here are some of our
sustainability highlights in more detail.
We were selected among one of the top five most sustainable companies in the world within
our peer group in the annual GRESB (Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark)
assessment, and gained a Global Sector Leader accolade in the same assessment. Our
climate goals have been accepted by the SBTi (Science Based Targets initiative).
Amazing – how about some impressive numbers?
- The CO2 emissions from our own activities (Scope 1 and 2) decreased by 67.7% compared to the average in 2016–2018
- Indirect Scope 3 emissions in the value chain decreased by 23.2% compared to the
starting level in 2019 - Energy consumption decreased by 9.7% from the level in 2016–2018
- 25% of our properties and their turnover is in line with taxonomy
- The environmental certification level (LEED and BREEAM) was 81 % of the value of
the properties.
We also launched a Community Engagement Programme during last year, that encourages
Sponda employees to use 1–2 working days each year for volunteer work. It has been a
smashing success, with our staff eagerly signing up to pick up trash from a Helsinki beach,
as well as volunteer in a food distribution center. Did you know, that the initiative for this
community engagement came from our CEO?
Our vision is to be the most trusted and profitable operator and a true sustainability leader in
the real estate sector. With this goal in mind, we set about defining our new sustainability
programme for 2023-2025. We have defined our energy objectives until 2030 and the
climate goals aim for carbon neutrality in terms of energy consumption already by 2025,
brought from 2030 to 2025. With our ambitious sustainability program, we are challenging
the entire industry.
The sustainability themes are based on our strategy and have been defined together with
our stakeholders. Based on the wishes of and in close co-operation with our stakeholders,
the following four themes became the core focus areas of Sponda’s sustainability
operations: environment, society, personnel and governance.
These themes will lead the sustainable way for us going forward!
